How to Get There
New South Wales Snow Fields
Most international flights terminate at either Sydney or Melbourne airports. From Sydney, you can drive south to Thredbo or Perisher Blue, although be prepared for a 5 to 6 hour drive. The gateway town to Thredbo and Perisher Blue is Jindabyne, located approximately 40 kilometres, or a 30-40 minute drive (in good conditions), from the ski fields. Quite a number of people elect to stay in Jindabyne, primarily because accommodation is cheaper and food outlets are plentiful. The ski fields are quite accessible from Jindabyne via the Ski Tube train from Bullocks Flat (and you don’t have to pay National Park Fees or carry snow chains), which is approximately 20 minutes drive from Jindabyne. Ski Tube trains run every 20 minutes past the hour during the ski season.
If you do intend to drive direct to the Thredbo and Perisher Blue ski fields, note that you need to purchase a Kosciusko National Parks Pass for each day that you are there (which can add a considerable additional cost, see the Kosciuszko National Park website for pricing – ), and you must carry snow chains (unless you have a 4WD vehicle).
he nearest regional airport to the ski fields is located in Canberra, an approximately 3 to 4 hour drive from the ski fields. A number of Australian domestic carriers service this route including Qantas and Virgin Blue.
There are also a number of coach (bus) operators that depart from Central Station in Sydney city direct to Jindabyne.
Victorian Snow Fields
From Melbourne, you can fly direct to Mount Hotham via one of the many air-charter services available, making it a popular option, although these charter flights can be expensive. Mount Buller is the closest of the three Victorian resorts to Melbourne, approximately 3 hour drive from Melbourne, making it extremely popular for weekend getaways. Falls Creek is the largest of all three Victorian resorts, and is a 4 1/2 hour drive from Melbourne.
A number of coach (bus) operators operate charters direct to Mount Hotham, Mount Buller and Falls Creek from Melbourne.
